The First Congress

And now, another fact of Congress

Long before there was a Congress or a US Government …ah, not that far… there were 13 colonies of people living along the east coast of America.

These colonies were under British rule, but many wanted to start a brand new country.

The people who led the fight for freedom and founded our government are referred to as the founders.

They boldly declared their independence from British rule on July 4, 1776.

After seven hard years at war, the Americans and the British declared peace, and on September 17, 1787, the United States of America officially started with the signing of the US Constitution.

Article 1, Section 1 of the Constitution said "all legislative powers…shall be vested in a Congress… which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives."

The first federal Congress, located in New York City, played an important role in setting up the government for the first time!

("Brilliant!")

And that's another fact of Congress.
