An Ordinary Day

General Overview

This module illustrates how our daily activities are affected by acts of Congress and government. Upon completion of this e-learning module, students will have a much better understanding of the role of government in our lives. View the "how to" document

Lessons

The lessons listed below are self-contained. You may complete them in any order you wish.

What is Government? (Grades 5–8)

This lesson explains what government is and what purpose it serves. Students will analyze how the purposes of government impact the individual and society.

Making Laws (Grades 5–8)

This lesson explains how laws passed by government affect students’ daily lives. Students will examine how legislators debate, discuss, and pass into law the public policies that affect their lives.

What is Public Policy? (Grades 5–8)

This lesson explains what public policy is. Students examine newspapers to find examples of public policy and discuss how public policy affects their lives.

The Purpose of Government (Grades 9–12)

This lesson examines how the Founders defined government and explains the purpose of government. Students will learn how the U.S. government fulfills its responsibilities.

The Powers of National and State Governments (Grades 9–12)

This lesson examines the different jurisdictions and roles of national and state governments. Students will analyze how actions of the national and state governments affect their daily lives.

The Role of Government and Citizens (Grades 9–12)

This lesson analyzes the roles of government and citizens in a representative democracy. Students will examine how political solutions to public policy problems are generated through interactions of individual citizens and groups with their government.

Rubrics : This section contains performance assessment rubrics for students who have completed all of the lessons in the An Ordinary Day Module. These rubrics may be saved and used as is, or you can modify the rubrics in any way that is appropriate for your students.
