Congress on Close-Up

The Center, along with the Close-Up Foundation, produces one-hour television programs shown on C-SPAN that feature members of Congress, state legislators and representatives from the academic community in Q&A sessions with selected high school and college students. Summaries of the programs follow. Video excerpts from the programs can be found in the e-learning modules "Understanding Representative Democracy", and "Getting Involved."

The Center is working on new programs with the Close-Up Foundation that will air on C-SPAN and will be posted here in the spring.

Getting Involved

The program titled "Getting Involved: Civic Engagement " aired on March 18, 2004. Panelists are Political Scientist William Galston, Former U.S. Representative David Skaggs, and State Educator Marcie Taylor-Thoma.

The program, titled "Achieving Bipartisanship", aired on February 16, 2001. Center Director Lee Hamilton and former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan discussed bipartisan cooperation in Congress.

How Congress Affects Our Daily Life program

The program, titled "How Congress Affects Our Daily Life", aired on February 18, 2000. Panelists are former House Minority Leader Robert Michel (R-Illinois), former House Representative Patricia Schroeder (D-Colorado), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director James L Witt.

The Role of Congress program

The program titled "The Role of Congress" aired on January 21, 2000, and featured a conversation with Senator Bob Dole and Lee Hamilton. Topics discussed included the role of lobbyists, Congress and the role of oversight, etc.
